December 2017

The theme for this year’s Meagan’s Walk is: Together We Hug. When planning the first Meagan’s Walk and Hug in 2002, that devoted team of pioneer volunteers wanted to do something that had not been done before. How to rally enough people and “hug” an enormous hospital? “No one does that. “ Such a gesture- the “hug”- was impractical, if not impossible! How does one hug a building the size of a city block? And why? Despite all the doubts and concern, that first hug happened. The will of a “community” made it happen.

Families affected by brain tumours face painful challenges and difficulty. Knowing you are not alone, that someone else understands your experience, can make the road less lonely. For many of us, the holiday season can be especially difficult. All those cheery messages at this time of year may sound hollow, as we deal with the daily reality of our lives.

In 2018, our family will participate in the 17th Annual Meagan’s Walk. Just like that first year, we ask others to walk with us. And years later, we continue to plan, and the Meagan’s Walk message of hope and love prevails. The thread that runs through Meagan’s Walk is “togetherness”; the hug simply could not happen without each of us and our decision to join forces, hand in hand.Together, we will hug.

I send to all of you my thanks for your determined and generous support, and my warmest wishes for the holiday.

The 16th Annual Meagan’s Walk, by all measures, was a great success. Funds raised for paediatric brain tumour research have now surpassed the $5 million mark, and this is because of the generosity of the Meagan’s Walk supporters: Hug participants, volunteers, donors, and sponsors. All are critical to the ongoing success of this organization and the achievement of goals. Read all about this and more.

Hugs! Hope! Impact!

There is a powerful link between what we do together, as a caring community, at Meagan's Walk, and its effect on the health of children.

With our support of research funding, advances continue in the understanding of how brain tumours work. And this leads to changes in the care of children. Join us on May 13th. Be part of the Hug and let's make a difference!

December 2016

With the holiday season just around the corner, many want to give a gift that is significant and will also make a difference!

Denise Bebenek founded Meagan’s Walk to raise awareness about paediatric brain tumours and funds for much needed research. Her determination grew, starting with the first Meagan’s Walk. Now as a community united by hope, Meagan’s Walk has directed more than $4.5 million to ground-breaking paediatric brain tumour research and discoveries that are changing treatments and outcomes for children with brain tumours.

Meagan’s Walk is a volunteer, community and not-for-profit organization that keeps making a difference! Dr. Christian Smith, Operations Manager at The Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre, says, “Without grassroots funding, researchers would have to frame their research according to government funding levels. There would be no funding to support new project ideas.”

This holiday season, please help make a difference. Your support is greatly appreciated!
